Police have arrested 9 suspected robbers in connection with robbery attacks on forex bureaus-IGP

Written by  Feb 27, 2018
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante Appeatu, has revealed that, nine (9) suspected armed robbers who participated in incessant armed robbery attacks on Forex bureaus on the Spintex Road in recent times, have been arrested. The arrest according to the IGP, was based on intelligence gathered by the police administration. He made the revelation at a forum organized by the American Chamber of Commerce, Ghana. According to the IGP, the concerns raised by the Ghana Association of Forex Bureaus that, its members are living in fear over the number of robbery cases is justified. The association has disclosed to the media that 20 forex bureaux have so far been attacked by armed robbers in Accra and Tema in the Greater Accra Region. Some of the bureaux robbed this year include Emmajets Forex Bureau at Baatsonaa; Shan Forex Bureau at Spintex; Forbes Forex Bureau, near Baatsonaa Total; and Golden Expression Forex Bureau, located at Community 18 Junction on the Spintex Road. Commenting on the issue the IGP said, they have managed to arrest 9 suspects who have confirmed to participating in the robbery attacks carried out on the Spintex Road. He also commented on the logistical constraint of the service saying: ‘’the current condition in the Ghana Police Service seems to be challenging hence the service is far from being effective and efficient as we desire. There is lack of basic equipment, accommodation and the training of our officers in their career development.’’ The recent ranking of police organizations in the world placed the Ghana Police Service on ‘’the 87th position in the world and in Africa we were ranked number 8 and in West Africa, we are number 3. So if we are number 8, we can be number 1. So that is the reason for Ghana Police Transformation Agenda. It requires us to improve upon our services to the people of Ghana and the need to use technology to solve crime; as crime as become more sophisticated.’’
