The Member of Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has said the assessment done by the Minority MPs in the Northern region has revealed that, the military detailed to the region touched 14 tipper trucks, an excavator, and motorbikes belonging to sand winners.
He also revealed that the military men brutalized the sand winners, seized their mobile phones and other belongings.
A contingent of armed military personnel set fire to 14 tipper trucks and an excavator used for sand winning at Dalun river a tributary of the White Volta in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region.
The burning was done after several warning to sand winners to stop their illegal activity close to the river failed.
But the legislator said from their investigations, it was established that the area where the trucks were burnt was not near the water body.
The action he lamented was unlawful because Ghana is not a banana republic where the rights of citizens would be tampered with.
‘’There is no law that supports the burning of equipment even if they are used for illegal activities. The punishment was not in commensurate with the crime of the people,’’ he added.
The activities of sand winners have threatened the Dalun river which is a major source of water supply to the people in the region.
Managers of the Ghana Water Company have been concerned about the state of the Dalun river which is continuously polluted by the activities of sand winners and also risk drying up.
