The Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery has expressed outrage at the attack on a nursing mother by a police officer at the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans Company.
According to the Minister, he was horrified at the ‘’unacceptable behaviour’’ by the police officer.
The Minister said he has directed the IGP, Asante Appeatu to take immediate effect because it was an unacceptable act by an armed police man to attack an unarmed nursing mother.
The Minister believes the police man should be dismissed if it is established that the police officer acted unprofessionally.
The Minister further noted that, from what he has seen in the video, the police officer had no right to assault the nursing mother.
Social media users have been angered after a video exposing a police officer abusing a customer of Midland Savings and Loans Company went viral.
The viral video captured the officer whose name has been given as Fredrick Amanor, kicking, slapping and dragging the customer who was carrying her baby on the floor in the banking hall.
According to sources, the lady had gone to the bank to withdraw her deposit of GHc250.
However, management of the bank reportedly ordered the police officer to escort the customer out of the banking hall because they had closed.
Users on social media are demanding for justice for the victim. Others have demanded for the immediate interdiction and prosecution of the officer who they claim abused his office and dragged the name of the police administration in the mud.
The Midland Savings and Loans Company has also offered an unqualified apology to the nursing mother and condemned the action by the police officer.
In the course of the action, the gun of the police officer which was strapped on his shoulder fell off as well as his communication gadget.
He later made an attempt to hit the woman with his gun.
Meanwhile, the police officer has been arrested following an order by the IGP. The police officer could be dismissed because his action is gross misconduct, PRO for the service, SP David Eklu has said.
