GAF congratulates athletes who participated in recent ASABA Championship

Written by  Aug 09, 2018
The Ghana Athletics Federation has congratulated the four athletes who participated in the just-ended African Senior Athletics Championship in Nigeria and thanked idividuals and organizations who supported Team Ghana during the championships. Ghana was represented by four athletes; Janet Amponsah, Hor Halutie, Abigail Kwarteng and Emmanuel Yeboah. Janet Amponsah won a silver and bronze medal in the 100 and 200 metres respectively. Hor finished in the finals of both 100 and 200 metres, while Abigail Kwarteng finished 4th in the womens high jump. Speaking to Rainbow Sports about the team’s performance in Nigeria, The GAA Treasurer, Dr Marc Dzradosi said, he was happy with the performance of the athletes. “The team faced a lot of challenges prior to the championship, but we took it in good faith”. We are proud of the athletes for working hard to represent the nation well, and come home with two medals. Financial issues have been the main problem of the Federation. Out of about 16 athletes including the relay teams that qualified, GAA was only able to send 4 of the athletes. Dr. Dzradosi further indicated that, without financial support, they won’t be able to organise enough competitions to promote athletics and help the athletes to improve their performances to compete at the world stage. “A lot of sports federations have to find money to sponsor sportsmen and women to international competitions”. When quizzed about the previous championships, he said, “We were in South Africa in 2016 and finished 6th out of all the African countries that participated. We were hoping to win four medals, but we came home with 2, which is not bad”. The Ghana Athletics Federation was fortunate to have support from Just Because Fitness, individuals and corporate organizations to enable us organize our Circuit Championships, and we are grateful to all of them. The Ghana Athletics Association will organise National Athletics Circuit Championship at the Tamale Sports Stadium on 26th August, 2018. Dr. Marc Dzradosi further called on the government for financial support for the Federation and also to invest in athletics to help develop the sport, unearth talent and develop athletes to compete at the world stage. Team Kenya were the official winners of the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship after finishing with a total of 19 medals - 11 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze whilst Ghana won 2 medals.
