The Sabegu community in the Tolon District of the Northern Region have pass a bye law banning young girls from migrating to the cities to work as head porters popularly refereed to as 'kayaytei'.
The bye law states that any household who's young girl travels to city to work as a Kayayoo will be sanctioned. The new bye-law also prohibits households from giving out their underage daughters into marriage.
Speaking at a durbar to pronounce the bye-laws, the Assemblyman of the area, Mr. Hamidu Abdul-Latif said, those by-laws passed will discourage parents especially mothers, who spearhead the issues of Kayayei from the act.
In her speech, project officer of NORSAAC, Madam Nancy Yeri lauded the community members for the initiative and have asked them to those bye-laws work.
She has therefore urged the people to continue working hard to bring an end the issue of child marriage and Kayayei.
