A former Deputy Commissioner of Customs under the erstwhile Kufour administration has slammed the outgoing president, H.E John Dramani Mahama for approving an increment in salaries for public sector workers and allowances for personnel of the National Service Scheme by 12% and 40 percent respectively.
According to him, the outgoing administration is only increasing the wage bill a situation he lamented will create challenges for the incoming government.
The NDC administration he noted has balloon our debt stock and always contracting loans to embark on projects which never existed.
He wondered why the government had to wait until two weeks to exit office before approving contracts, recruit people and approve increment in salaries after losing the elections.
He said, ‘’the incoming administration have plans to also recruit and appoint competent people after assuming office so why should you appoint people, and increase salaries? Do you want to increase the wage bill? Do you want to prevent the incoming administration from also filling the various positions? I do not agree with the president because he acted irresponsibly.’’
Mr. Abrebrese also watered down the argument that the president had not ended his term hence has the constitutional obligation to take decisions. In his view, the action by the president breaches the transitional act, defeats the spirit of constitutional and lacks morals.
He also refuted suggestions that the former president Kufour did the same thing when leaving office in 2008.
‘’Kufour was not irresponsible like President Mahama. He did not take decisions to frustrate the incoming administration like what we see today. He was a responsible leader , had the nation at heart and discharged his duty with integrity before leaving office.’’
He described the ongoing recruitment at the various state institutions as ''political appointments'' and has hinted that the party will review each and every single appointment.
‘’It is in order for the incoming administration to review President Mahama’s appointments. We reserve the rights to do so.These appointments are political. You appoint your members at the last hour because you've lost an election. These appointees are incompetent and an incompetent person cannot serve under the new administration. If you are competent, you will serve but if not we will go for another person to take over.’’
I am ready to serve under Nana Addo
Commenting on the appointment of ministers and other key positions by Nana Akufo-Addo, he said, the appointments will be based on criteria and competence.
He said, Nana Addo will not be pushed around or be under pressure to appoint people because he [Nana Addo] is observant, diligent and will appoint people who are God fearing, dedicated and has the nation at heart to assist him deliver his promises to Ghanaians.
