Written by  Mar 09, 2017
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Akwasi Osei says the stigma associated with individuals facing psychological problems is alarming and causing more affected persons to take their lives. Speaking in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm on recent increase in suicide cases, he said peer pressure, depression among other challenges are influencing people to take their lives. According to him, clinical psychologists are rare in our various educational institutions a situation he indicated is worrying. He also bemoaned the inability of the state to pass the Legislative Instrument (LI) on Mental Health.   He said for so many years, we’ve been pushing for the passage of this Legislative Instrument (LI) we have failed to do so. I will encourage the media to be at the forefront of this agenda. The media should discuss it.    He said ''the solution to the mental health problems in the country was the passage of a Legislative Instrument on Mental Health; as it has provisions for raising funds to support the facilities. Over the period of two weeks, more than three cases of suicide have been recorded across the country. These include some tertiary students and a basic school student.
