The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has applauded President Alassane Ouattara for his show of statesmanship, in the aftermath of the verdict passed by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the delimitation of the maritime boundaries of the two countries. According to President Akufo-Addo, “we realised there was a delicate moment, when it came to this dispute over our maritime border. But, your statesmanship, friendship and regard for the interests of our two countries, made it possible for us to overcome that delicate moment, and use it as a basis for forging even stronger relations between us.” President Akufo-Addo made this known on Monday, 16th October, 2017, during bilateral talks with President Alassane Ouattara, at the commencement of the latter’s 2-day official visit to Ghana. Whilst expressing his and the gratitude of the Ghanaian people for President Ouattara’s visit to Ghana, President Akufo-Addo noted that “there are a lot of things we need to do to bring our two nations into greater intimacy, than we have in the past. Acknowledging the political will on the part of President Ouattara to deepen and strengthen the bonds of friendship with Ghana, President Akufo-Addo noted that “it is for us, on our side in Ghana, to complement it.” The President continued, “There is a bright future, if we are able to get our various darts in the correct row. The Ghanaian people continue to be very supportive of all the initiatives there are to improve our ties with your country.” President Akufo-Addo reiterated the commitment of Ghana to translate the “technical decisions” agreed on paper “into concrete decisions that affect the lives of the people, and that is what is most important. At this juncture in our history, we have a historic opportunity to being our two countries together.” President Alassane Ouattara, prior to his discussion with President Akufo-Addo, received a rousing welcome Ghanaians, as he was driven through the principal streets of Accra, amidst spontaneous cheers and chants from hundreds and hundreds of Ghanaians who lined up to welcome him. Prior to President Ouattara’s departure, on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, the two leaders will address a joint press conference. They will also sign a bilateral agreement, and inaugurate a joint commission for the implementation of the recent ITLOS judgement on the delimitation of the maritime boundaries between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

Chaos erupted at the Asafo bus terminal in Kumasi Monday morning when operators of VIP bus and Inter-City STC clashed over a loading terminal. Rainbow Radio’s Kwabena Amoateng said it took the intervention of police personnel from the Ashanti SWAT team to bring sanity to the densely populated area as the two protagonists held unto their entrenched positions. According to him, some officials of STC, who had visited the Asafo Market terminal to launch the Corporation’s new terminal were denied access to the venue by VIP bus officials. Director of Finance for VIP, Prof. Lukemond Owusu Ansah, told the media that his outfit staged the protest to oppose some GPRTU officials’ decision to give out part of its land to STC without the consent of other branches of GPRTU. Meanwhile, one person have been arrested over the issue and the regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah is currently in the region to meet with the two transport firms to resolve the issue.

Reinstate Kwabena Agyapong-Group

Some polling station Executives with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region are advocating for the reinstatement of suspended General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong. At a press conference Monday, the group said, the embattled officer has conducted himself gracefully well since he was suspended. Kwabena Agyapong was suspended indefinitely along with the Second Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe after they publicly kicked against the suspension of his close ally, the National Chairman. Their conduct, the party's Disciplinary Committee said, violated Article 3(d) of the party’s constitution which demands members to publicly uphold the party's decisions. They were accused of frustrating the efforts of the then opposition party to focus on winning the 2016 general elections after staying in opposition for eight years. Mr Tweneboah Kodua, convener for the group, appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, the National Executive Council of the party and former President John Agyekum Kufuor, to reconsider the suspension and call Mr Agyapong back.

As many as 165 unidentified bodies have been buried after a massive truck bomb attack in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday. At least 276 people have died and the government news agency Sonna says only 111 of them have been identified. A Turkish military plane is taking 40 of the injured to Turkey for medical treatment. It is the deadliest terror attack in Somalia since the Islamist al-Shabab group launched its insurgency in 2007. Some of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition. Of those who were identified, one of the victims was a medical student who was due to graduate the next day. Her father had flown to Mogadishu to attend her graduation but instead witnessed her burial. No group has yet said it was behind the bombing at a busy junction, destroying hotels, government offices and restaurants. But President Mohamed Abdullahi "Farmajo" Mohamed blamed al-Shabab, calling it a "heinous act". Al-Shabab, which is allied to al-Qaeda, and which often attacks Mogadishu, normally claims them fairly quickly afterwards. On Sunday, some Somalis took to the streets of Mogadishu to condemn the group. Maryam Abdullahi had been due to graduate as a doctor the following day. Ms Abdullah's sister Anfa'a told the BBC Somali Service that she was devastated. "The family is so shocked, especially our father who travelled all the way from London to attend her graduation, but instead he attended her burial." Anfa'a said she had spoken to her sister 20 minutes before the blast. "At that time she was in Banadir Hospital where she was working. She told me she was waiting for some files from the hospital and she promised to call back". A BBC Somali reporter at the scene of the main blast said the Safari hotel collapsed with people trapped under the rubble. An eyewitness, local resident Muhidin Ali, told AFP it was "the biggest blast I have ever witnessed, it destroyed the whole area". Meanwhile, the director of the Madina Hospital, Mohamed Yusuf Hassan, said he was shocked by the scale of the attack. "What happened yesterday was incredible, I have never seen such a thing before, and countless people lost their lives. Corpses were burned beyond recognition." Source:BBC

A spate of wildfires in central and north Portugal which started at the weekend has killed at least 31 people, civil defence authorities say. Dozens of the 145 fires still raging are considered serious, a spokeswoman said. To the north, fires which broke out across the border in Spain's Galicia region claimed at least three lives. Thousands of firefighters are battling the flames, which erupted after a hot dry summer. Conditions were worsened by Hurricane Ophelia, as it approached Europe's western coast, bringing strong winds to fan and spread the flames. More than 50 people have also been injured in Portugal; 15 are reported to be in a serious condition. Local media say several people are still missing there, including a month-old baby. In Spain, two of the victims were found in a burned-out car by the side of the road. Rain is forecast for the affected regions late on Monday. A state of emergency has been declared in Portugal north of the Tagus river - about half of the country's land area. More than 6,000 firefighters in 1,800 vehicles were deployed by early Monday morning. As a result of the fires, at least a dozen roads were closed, as well as schools in some places. The Portuguese deaths were in the Coimbra, Guarda, Castelo Branca and Viseu areas. "We went through absolute hell. It was horrible. There was fire everywhere," a resident of Penacova, near Coimbra, was quoted as telling Portuguese RTP radio and TV. Fabio Ventura, who lives in Marinha Grande, in Leria district, told the BBC that some of his friends in villages in the nearby forest had lost their homes. "Currently, we don't have water in our homes because the pipes were damaged by the fire. We are avoiding taking showers to save water. The mobile network is going down several times and there is a huge cloud of smoke and ashes above my city. "Schools were closed, public services are closed, some roads are also closed. I have friends that lost their homes, but everyone is OK in my area." Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy travelled to the Pontevedra area of Galicia and met emergency workers on Monday afternoon. "What we are dealing with here is something that is not caused by accident. It has been provoked," Mr Rajoy said. "We are here in Pazos de Borden where there has been a big fire which began at 01:30 (22:00 GMT) in the morning at five different points. So as you can see it's impossible for this to be triggered under natural circumstances." Galician leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo has claimed the fires were deliberately set by arsonists, in what he called "terrorist acts". Earlier, Spain's Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said several people had already been identified in connection with the fires, and appealed for anyone with further information to share it with the national protection service. The wildfires follow a massive forest blaze in Portugal in June which killed 64 people and injured more than 130. Firefighters tackling that blaze also alleged it had been started by a "criminal hand". But in the aftermath, questions were raised about the speed of the response and the readiness to tackle such a fire. It also emerged that the country's rescue network, a public-private partnership, failed to connect several emergency calls to firefighters. Source: BBC

A group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Obomeng Kwahu has accused the Obohene, Nana Yeboah Afari Obaogyan II, of allegedly selling stool lands indiscriminately. The group in a statement said, ‘’We recognize him as our chief and accord him the respect due him customarily as we give to every chief within the Kwahu Traditional area, however, a situation where lands which are known to belong to the people of Obomeng both at Obomeng and Nkawkaw-Amanfrom are sold by Obohene is unacceptable. It is noted with concern that several areas of lands belonging to the people of Obomeng both at Obomeng and Nkawkaw-Amanfrom have all been sold by Obohene with impunity without recourse to the chief of Obomeng. Sadly, all attempts by the Late Krontihene of Obomeng and the sitting chief to get Obohene to desist from this uncustomary act have proved futile.’’ They have therefore appealed to the security agencies, MPs in the area, the president and other individuals who have the area at heart to take note of the following: ◈ That we want to state emphatically that we the people of Obomeng-Kwahu are not happy about this indiscriminate sale of Obomeng Stool lands by Obohene. ◈ That Obomeng-Kwahu is a sovereign town which has its own number of towns and villages which constitute Obomeng-Kwahu Stool Land over which Obohene customarily and legally exercises no jurisdiction. ◈ That we are giving Obohene seven (7) days from today to desist from the sale of any part of Obomeng Stool lands and also to revert the ones already sold to Obomenghene i.e. the lands at Obomeng and Nkawkaw-Amanfrom, with immediate effect. ◈ That we want Obohene to render an unqualified apology to Obomenghene, the people of Obomeng-Kwahu particularly to the members of the Obomeng SDA Church and the affected families for the sale of our lands and the destruction of those tombs. ◈ That if Obohene fail to adhere strictly to these directive, we the people of Obomeng and our allies will advise ourselves accordingly. Below is the full statement: PRESS RELEASE BY CONCERNED CITIZENS OF OBOMENG KWAHU ON THE INDISCRIMINATE SALE OF OBOMENG STOOL LANDS BY OBOHENE, OSABARIMA YEBOAH AFARI OBOAGYAN II We the concerned citizens of Obomeng-Kwaku in the Eastern Region of Republic of Ghana have taken a keen note on the indiscriminate sale of Obomeng stool lands by the chief of Obo-kwahu, Nana Yeboah Afari Obaogyan II and we wish to take this opportunity to express or displeasure over this development. First of all, we regard and give reverence to Obohene who is also the Nifahene of Kwahu. We recognize him as our chief and accord him the respect due him customarily as we give to every chief within the Kwahu Traditional area, however, a situation where lands which are known to belong to the people of Obomeng both at Obomeng and Nkawkaw-Amanfrom are sold by Obohene is unacceptable. It is noted with concern that several areas of lands belonging to the people of Obomeng both at Obomeng and Nkawkaw-Amanfrom have all been sold by Obohene with impunity without recourse to the chief of Obomeng. Sadly, all attempts by the Late Krontihene of Obomeng and the sitting chief to get Obohene to desist from this uncustomary act have proved futile. On the 13th day of September, 2017, Obohene sadly sold the Obomeng SDA church section of the Obomeng public cemetery to a private developer for the construction of a fuel station. Meanwhile, the SDA church had earlier in about two weeks buried bodies at the said location but strangle as we speak, grading of the land for the commencement of the construction of the fuel station is underway which has caused the destruction, exhumation and the exposure of the content of some tombs with its attendant health implications. That Obohene has take the chiefs and people of Obomeng-Kwahu and our agents for granted for far too long and it is time we stake a claim to what belong to us. Therefore we the citizen of Obomeng-Kwahu want Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Kwahuhene and President of Kwahu Traditional Council, the entire Membership of Kwahu Traditional Council, the Eastern Regional Minister, Our Members of Parliament, MCE of Kwahu West Municipal Assembly, the Ghana Police Service and the other States Security Agencies, citizens of Kwahu and all those whose have the interest of Kwahu at heart to take note of the following; ◈ That we want to state emphatically that we the people of Obomeng-Kwahu are not happy about this indiscriminate sale of Obomeng Stool lands by Obohene. We are by this urging angry and the teaming people especially the youth of Obomeng-Kwahu over the indiscriminate sale of our lands, to remain calm because we are optimistic that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Kwahuhene and President of Kwahu Traditional Council, the entire Membership of Kwahu Traditional Council, the Eastern Regional Minister, our Members of Parliament, MCE of Kwahu West Municipal Assembly, the DCE of Kwahu South District Assembly and all citizens of Kwahu will act swiftly after this statement. We finally urge the Nkawkaw Divisional Commander of the Ghana Police Service to immediately investigate, arrest and prosecute all those who invaded and damaged tombs at the Obomeng public cemetery. We are ever ready to defend and protect our lands in any forms and by any means necessary. LONG LIVE OBOMENGMAN! LONG LIVE CONCERNED CITIZENS OF OBOMENG!! LONG LIVE GHANA!!! GOD BLESS US ALL Spokes person: Mr. Asirifi (0244-528-750) Secretary : Mr. Siaw Ampadu a.k.a.Akonta (0208-113-190)
