The Greater Accra branch of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has threatened to instruct its members to cease filing their tax returns effective October 31, if government fails to stop foreigners from engaging in petty trading which is solely the reserve of Ghanaians. Speaking at a press conference, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman Mr. Amoateng said, they had wanted their members to stop filing their tax returns from October 1, in protest against the influx of foreigners in the retail business but decided to shift it to October 31 due to the implementation of the free senior high school. He said, just as foreigners are not allowed to become ministers or even the president per our laws, foreigners are not entitled to retail business in the country and we have to flush them out. GUTA had, in the past, raised numerous concerns about the influx of foreign businesses, owned particularly by Nigerians and Chinese onto the retail market. The traders argued that this development impacted negatively on their operations. However, we will not give this time, Mr. Amoateng said. On his part, Secretary, Nana Poku charged government to enforce the Ghana Investment Promotion Council law which bars foreigners from engaging in teh retail business. He said, given that the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act 108, bars foreigners from engaging in the retail business, government should nbot face any difficulty in enforcing that law.

Armed military personnel on Tuesday clashed with Alfred Woyome to value his property. Reports say the security operatives numbering over 25, made up of personnel from the National Security, military and officials from the Ghana Valuation Board besieged the residence of Mr. Woyome to value the building to offset the GHS51.2million the Government of Ghana is trying to retrieve from him. Mr. Woyome is said to have questioned how the military personnel secured a court warrant to come and value his property. In a bid to prevent the security operatives from entering into some parts of his Trassaco home, a police officer reportedly pointed a gun at Mr. Woyome’s wife claiming that he was being recorded. In an interview with Star Fm, Mr. Woyome said he only allowed the security operatives into his home after they produced what looked like “an order from the Supreme Court.” According to him, the security officers taunted him after one of them had pointed a gun on his wife. Mr. Woyome added that he is willing to repay the GHc51million but added that he is being harassed by the state.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo talks too much. He must crack the whip on corruption and stop talking, lawyer Abraham Amaliba has said. According to the private legal practitioner, the president’s commitment towards the fight against corruption is nothing to write home about. In the view of lawyer Amaliba, Presdient Akufo-Addo has failed in his fight against corruption and he has also lost respect because of his inability to deal with the canker. President Akufo-Addo should have given a strong signal with the allegation of bribery leveled against Boakye Agyarko when he appeared before the vetting committee. The lawyer said the president should have stayed the appointment of Agyarko until investigations into the matter were concluded. The president lost my respect when he gave Agyarko his appointment instrument before parliament came out with its findings. That is not a person that claims to be fighting corruption. ‘’The fight against corruption is not about talking…The president enjoys talking but the fight against corruption should be fought head on. He should learn from the Tanzanian president and stop talking.’’ On the appointment of Special Prosecutor he said, we do not need a Special Prosecutor rather the president can appoint one of his Deputy Attorney General to that office. ‘’We didn’t even need a Special Prosecutor. Is the Special Prosecutor not going to be a human being? When he [Nana Addo] was Attorney General, he prosecuted NDC officials including former First Lady Konadu Agyemang Rawlings who is today his best friend…We have three Attorney Generals, why can’t you appoint one of them as the Special Prosecutor? It will be waste of money to appoint a Special Prosecutor. This is the first time we have three Attorney Generals and so why can’t you appoint one of them? He stressed that Nana Addo was not a a Special Prosecutor when he prosecuted some state officials over corrupt practices hence he should act now.

A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) legal team, lawyer Abraham Amaliba has posited that, the matter involving musician A-Plus and two Deputy Chiefs of Staff is deeply rooted in politics. The Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police yesterday [Monday] cleared the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff Abu Jinapor and Asenso-Boakye of any wrongdoing. A statement issued and signed by the Director General of the Police CID, Bright Oduro said after weeks of investigations it was evident the allegations by A Plus lack credibility. But commenting on the issue, lawyer Amaliba said the matter goes beyond the clearance because there is some level of politics in the matter. He lamented how Kwame A-Plus accused former President Mahama and some of his appointees of being corrupt even when he had no evidence to buttress it and yet the NPP hailed and believed him. ‘’A-Plus accused former President Mahama and some of his appointees of being corrupt even without evidence. The NPP hailed and believed him and even composed a song out of it. But today, they are feeling uncomfortable because he [A-Plus] accused them of being corrupt. They are now demanding for evidence. And so that is the political angel of it. Why did they believe in the accusation leveled against Mahama without evidence and yet they are now demanding for evidence. He described it as a double standard and hypocrisy in our body politics stressing President Nana Akufo-Addo benefited from the lies of A-Plus to become president. ‘’Nana Akufo-Addo benefited from the lies of A-Plus and today he is the president. He [Nana Addo] praised him [A-Plus] in his acceptance speech and praised him. The same person today is saying that your government is corrupt and you are uncomfortable and that you want evidence, that is a double standard,’’ he told Rainbow Radio’s Kwame Tutu. Meanwhile, he has suggested that the musician is not liable to any prosecution unless the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff initiate a civil case against him.

Private legal practitioner lawyer Abraham Amaliba says the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff Abu Jinapor and Asenso-Boakye- could take civil action against musician Kwame A-plus after the CID cleared them of any wrongdoing. A statement issued and signed by the Director General of the Police CID, Bright Oduro said after weeks of investigations it was evident the allegations by A Plus lack credibility. The musician originally known as Kwame Asare Obeng had accused the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff of bribery and corruption. “That on August 27, 2017 A Plus made allegations of corruption and thievery against Messers Asenso Boakye and Jinapor on his facebook post. “The allegations of thievery was dropped by A-Plus but that of corruption was maintained,” the statement said. When probed further on the issue of corruption A Plus cited an intervention by the two Chiefs of Staff on a matter involving the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. “That following a petition by Unibank Ghana Limited to the effect that the management of Korle Bu had abrogated an existing MOU with them without any reason and that the Korle Bu had not treated them fairly, Messers Asenso-Boakye and Jinapor among others intervened to seek clarity from the hospital’s management regarding the said petition,” the statement said. The Police CID did not find the intervention by the two as illegal or inconsistent with the laws of the country, stating, “the allegation of corruption of corruption was found to be baseless, unsubstantiated and without credibility,” the statement from the CI read. In an interview with Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm on whether there was any law that could be applied in sanctioning the musician, lawyer Amaliba said, there was no such law however, the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff are at liberty to take a civil action against A-Plus. He said, if the two feel defamed, they can initiate a civil action against A-Plus because there is no such law that can be applied to sanction the musician. If the two feel defamed, they can go to court and then bring an action on defamation to redeem their reputation but we cannot call for the prosecution and imprisonment of A-Plus. The individuals involved should take the civil action and bring an action against him [A-Plus].’’ He was however quick to add that there was some level of politics in the matter saying, when A-Plus accused Mahama of being corrupt, the NPP hailed him and failed to demand for an evidence to buttress his allegations against Mr. Mahama. But today, they are uncomfortable that he [A-Plus] had accused two appointees of Nana Addo. They demanded for evidence. That was hypocritical on the part of the NPP, he added.

One of the Tourism Ambassadors appointed by the Tourism Ministry, Evangelist Diana Asamoah has lambasted entertainment critic and CEO of Oxy FM, Kwame Alfred aka DJ Oxygen for asserting that, she [Diana Asamoah] lacks competence to work in her new capacity. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture last week appointed Ghanaian musicians Diana Asamoah and Kaakyire Kwame Appiah as tourism ambassadors. In a letter signed by the minister, Catherine Ablema Afeku, said the musicians have been asked to use their talents to promote sustainable tourism through music, arts, and culture. “I write to officially confirm your appointment as Tourism Ambassador for Ghana. "We at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture look forward to a fruitful relationship that will promote Ghana’s Domestic and International Tourism through your efforts,” a section of the appointment letter sent to the musicians read. Responding to the appointment of Diana Asamoah on GH Entertainment, DJ Oxy as he is popularly called posited that, the award winning gospel musician would not be able to work effectively because she is unlettered. He insisted that the appointment was flawed and was only meant to reward the musician for her endorsement of Nana Addo in 2016. But speaking in an interview with rainbowradioonline.com, Evangelist Diana Asamaoh took a swipe at Oxy describing his comments as unfortunate. She emphasized that she will deliver exceptionally and her legacy as Tourism Ambassador will make her critics marvel. According to her, she will bring her competence to bear in her new appointment. She made reference to 1st Corinthians 1:27 which read: ‘’ Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful,’’ (New Living Translation) to buttress her point. She also made reference to Acts 4:13 which read: ‘’ 13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus,’’ to also make a strong case that she [Diana Asamoah] is like someone considered as unschooled but what her delivery for new appointment will shock everyone.

A Deputy National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joshua Hamidu Akamba says his reason for relocating to another country following the victory of President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 was to stay and fight the lawlessness under the ruling government. In 2016 the fierce critic of President Nana Akufo-Addo prophesied that the presidency of the latter would be characterized with lawlessness and impunity. In an interview with Rainbow Radio in 2016, the Deputy Organizer promised to relocate his family because President Akufo-Addo will unleash terror on Ghanaians under his rule. However, after nine months Nana Addo was declared winner and sworn in, he [Akamba] has not relocated as promised. When asked by Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm why he has failed to honour his promise he said, I stayed because I wanted to fight Nana Addo’s lawlessness. He said, you remember I told you Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, would unleash a reign of terror on Ghanaians if handed the keys to the Flagstaff House on December 7. Has he not done that? Have we not witnessed the lawlessness of the Delta and Invisible Forces? The number of robbery cases recorded under this current government affirms my position held in 2016 that he [Nana Addo] would unleash on us terror.’’ ‘’I promised to relocate my family should Nana Addo win but upon a second thought I decided to stay back and fight and that is what I did. We have been able to maintain peace in the country,’’ he added.
