AMI commends Parl for the passage of the Road Traffic Amendment Act

December 22, 2020

Civic Education and Public Advocacy Think-Tank, The Atta-Mills Institute (AMI) has commended the Parliament of Ghana for the passage of the Road Traffic Amendment Act, 2004 (Act 683).

A statement issued by AMI said the bill “speaks loudly to how Ghana’s democratic dispensation has opened up more space for civic participation because constituents and individuals can now lobby their Members of Parliament to introduce Bills that meet the specific desires of the different facets of our public participation in the governance process”.

In the view of the Institute, the bill has come at at a time that the wanton loss of precious lives via road accidents is reaching very alarming and dizzy heights, is most welcomed not only because it will give more traffic related security to pregnant women, but also because it will duly punish errant drivers and cyclists in order to reduce the unacceptable levels of recklessness/impunity on our roads.

Meanwhile, the statement has also commended the EC for it’s organisation of the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“In line with expressing appreciation to the growth of State Institutions, and in the wake of the just-ended Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, the AMI congratulates the Jean Mensah led Electoral Commission for rolling out an extremely free and fair voting process that allowed all eligible voters to cast their ballot in accordance with worldwide acceptable, Universal Adult Suffrage principles.

We further congratulate all the Security Agencies, State and Private Institutions, the 22 (including the AMI) Local and 6 International Observer Teams, Local and International Media, the various political parties, as well as the Good People of Ghana for keeping a very close eye on the election processes – before, during, and after the election.”
