Licenses of doctors involved in baby harvesting case suspended-GMA

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Medical Council will not shield anyone or member from wrongdoing.

These bodies he noted ensure their members are always discharging their duties in accordance with the ethics of the profession.

Reacting to the arrest of some medical officers over alleged baby harvesting crimes, he advised for the suspects to be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction for them to be heard.


He explained the 11 suspects have not been given the opportunity to a fair hearing hence they should be arraigned for them to be heard.

He told Kwabena Agyapong that the court should be allowed to deal with the matter and if there are evidences to support the crime, they should be dealt with.

The Medical and Dental Council and the Economic and Organised Crime Office have arrested some 11 persons including doctors and nurses in an alleged baby harvesting crimes.

The two bodies have been investigating the activities of some medical practitioners, nurses, social welfare officers and other individuals who were suspected to be engaged in the illegal act of ‘baby harvesting’ and ‘human trafficking’.

The joint team carried out investigations into the illegal activities between the periods of June to November, 2020.

“As a result of these investigations, two medical doctors, two social workers, four nurses, two mothers and one traditional birth attendant have been arrested so far and are on bail pending further investigations. We currently have in our possession two baby boys who were bought as a result of the operation,” a joint statement from the two bodies said.

Reacting Dr. Jackson described the issue as unfortunate but stressed the need for due process to be followed and the persons involved prosecuted.

The doctor cum-lawyer who was speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm said this a bad behaviour and it serves as an opportunity for the bad nuts to be uprooted.

He also revealed the two doctors who have captured have been suspended.

“The two doctors who have named have had their licenses suspended. They can no longer practice as doctors until the matter is been resolved and the court has brought finality to the case. That is where we are now.”
