70 persons convicted for not wearing face masks-Police

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Ghana Police Service (GPS), Superintendent Sheila Abayie-Buckman has disclosed that some 70 persons have been convicted for not wearing their face masks.

Addressing journalists at the Information Ministry’s press briefing on the coronavirus outbreak, she disclosed that a total of 961 persons have so far been arrested since January 18, 2021.

She explained that over 1,000 persons were arrested with over 400 prosecuted and 70 convicted.

In her details she said, since the President’s last address, 961 have been arrested.

Out of the figure, Accra leads with 330 cases of the arrests.

A total of 487 were verbally cautioned and 477 given a written caution statements and granted bial.

The Police PRO warned the administration would have no option to deal ruthlessly with repeat offenders who fail to wear their face masks.

She added the Police will begin an exercise to stop and search vehicles to ensure the mandatory wearing of the face masks is adhered to.

This she noted would be some by any officer in a uniform perspective of their ranks and duties at the time of the search.

Vehicles with passengers without face masks would be removed from the vehicles and dealt with by the law.
