‘MPs party hard at a workshop, despite the ban on parties’

Parliament has thrown caution to the wind and broken the rule on the ban on parties in organising a bonding exercise for new members of parliament at Aqua Safari after a two-day workshop organised for new MPs.

Photos from the event have been posted on the official Facebook page of the legislative House.

Accompanying the photos was a short write which read: ” One of the ways people bond with each other is through music and dance. After a hard two day’s work, new Members of Parliament took to the dance floor to release some stress.”

This has generated mixed reactions from a section of the public who are wondering why our lawmakers would break the law with impunity.

Others are demanding answers to whether any of the 15 MPs who tested positive for the virus were present.

Currently, 15 MPs and 56 members of staff have tested positive for the deadly virus.

The situation has caused the House to sit twice a week as part of measures to prevent the spread.

Also, those who have tested positive are to go under treatment and recover before resuming work.

All these coupled with the ban on parties have forced some Ghanaians to slam the MPs for their merrymaking at their workshop.

The workshop was to equip Members with the requisite skills to enable them to effectively navigate their way in Parliament.

In a welcome address at the opening ceremony for the workshop, the Clerk to Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, urged the new members to learn from their senior colleagues, as Parliamentary rudiments are best mastered through experience. He also assured members of his and the staff of Parliament’s commitment to providing expert, impartial service to the Members and Institution of Parliament.

The Minority and Majority Leaders, in their remarks, referred to new members learning from old ones and said Parliament will be best served if Members work towards an excellent Parliament.

The Speaker of the 8th Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, in his keynote address, called on Members to eschew partisanship in their Parliamentary duties.

He further pledged his commitment to lead the House to work for the ultimate benefit of the country. The three-day workshop started with a lecture by the Speaker on the roles, duties and responsibilities of the Member of Parliament.
