The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured stakeholders in the football fraternity that the capping of spectators in our stadiums would soon be lifted.
The President was hopeful the local league which has already started will return to normalcy and spectators would have the opportunity to go to the stadiums in full capacity soon.
He made the remarks when he delivered his state of the nation address.
Currently, only 25 percent of fans are allowed into our stadiums during matches.
with strict adherence to the COVID-19 protocols, a statement from Ghana’s Sports Ministry indicated.
The 2020/21 Ghana Premier League ongoing was played behind closed doors until the President directed that 25% of sitting capacity be allowed to go watch matches.
In his SONA address today, Tuesday, March 9, 2021, the President disclosed the capping will soon be a thing of the past.
”The Ghana Premier League has started, and hopefully, when we return to normalcy, capping of spectators at the stadiums will be a thing of the past.”
He touched on projects his administration was embarking on saying: ”The construction of ten (10) Youth Resource Centres (YRC) across the country which are at different levels of completion of between eighty-five percent (85%) and ninety-five percent (95%). We are, as well, renovating and rehabilitating many other abandoned sports facilities. We are paying allowances to about one thousand (1000) athletes through the Youth Employment Agency.”
Touching on Ghana’s bid to host the All African Games, he said: ”Mr. Speaker, in 2018, Ghana won the bid to host and organise the 2023 African Games for the first time since the tournament started in 1965. A nine (9) member Local Organizing Committee has been constituted and inaugurated to handle the technical and events aspects of the 2023 Africa Games. Government intends to provide maximum support to the LOC to help ensure we organise and host successful games.”
He then applauded the massive performance by the Black Satellites in the just ended U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament held in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania.
The team beat Uganda by 2 goals to nil in the finals on Saturday, the 6th of March 2021.
The President termed this, as an “Independence Gift”.
He said, “Ayekoo” to the players, the management team and the technical team over their victory.
He stated that this victory should be the beginning of a new era of success for Ghanaian Football.
