A communications team member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana K. Yeboah, has asked the Ghana Institute of Journalism, (GIJ), to rescind its decision in asking students who delayed in paying their fees to defer their course.
He opined that the claims by the management that the system used in registering the students was closed could be reopened to allow them to register and write their exams.
Management of the school has justified reasons for asking the affected students to defer their course.
According to a press release to clarify the issue, management said the decision aligns with Section 9.3 of the Institute’s Undergraduate Academic Policies and Procedures.
It, therefore, said the students should find the deferment as an opportunity to retain their studentship.
“Management notification to students who fell foul of the above sections was to ensure that affected students do not lose their studentship. Deferment of the programme should therefore not be seen as a punishment but as an opportunity to retain studentship,” the release issued by the Public Affairs Unit on Wednesday, March 24 said.
But Nana Kay said the Covid-19 situation brought untold hardship on Ghanaians hence it is insensitive to ask the students to defer after struggling to pay their fees.
” I would plead with the management to take a second look at the issue and allow cooler heads to prevail. I worked at Regent University, and one of the policies we used was the penalty system for students who delay in paying their fees. I think the management could apply that system and allow the students to write the exams.”
Going forward, he advised the school to put it on paper when admitting students on this form of measure, so when they default, they will not blame anyone.
