The Minority in Parliament has admonished President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to establish a Legal Education Reform Committee to review legal education challenges in the country.
Haruna Iddrisu, the leader of the Minority, made the appeal after receiving a petition from protesting LLB graduates demanding reforms to legal education.
The Minority Leader said “I have no hesitation sharing your view for a critical eye on legal education in Ghana.”
He further asserted that if he fails to do that [establish a Legal Education Reform Committee], we can still use our legislative mandate and authority to get such a commission formed.”
“We share a strong view that legal education should not be reserved for a select few, and we share the view that it should be made increasingly accessible and open without compromising quality,” Mr. Iddrisu added.
Members of the National Association of Law Students (NALS) and some persons who couldn’t make it into the Ghana School of Law this year demonstrated today, Wednesday, October 20, 2021.
The affected LLB graduates are demanding reforms in Ghana’s legal education regime.
They pleaded with the leadership of Parliament to act fast to prevent any further actions from the aggrieved students.
The pass mark for the entrance exams had always been a total of 50% in both sections.
However, for this year’s exams, the rule was changed, and candidates had to score at least 50% in each of the sections.
