The Chief of Hyiawu in the Ashanti region has banned wake keeping in his community as part of measures to help control the high rate of teenage pregnancy.
The chief, Nana Agyemang III and his elders explained that wake keepings have resulted in a high rate of teenage pregnancy.
The traditional leader indicated that families are not allowed to organize wake keepings for their families.
Aside from that, funerals are not to go beyond 6 pm since that would amount to a breach of the ban the traditional authority had put in place.
Reporting from the area, Rainbow Radio’s Abdul Malik said the chiefs were worried at the rate of teenage pregnancy and blamed wake keepings and the late closure of ceremonies in the community.
The reporter added that all other ceremonies are not to go beyond 6 pm, and persons who would breach the ban would be punished.
