The Ghana Water Company has dragged 28 of its customers in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipality and the Cape Coast South District to court.
The company has taken the legal action the customers over unpaid utility bills.
The company disclosed to the media that the customers owe the company more than GH300,000.
Efforts by the company to retrieve the debt owed them have proved futile.
It said despite persistent notices by the company, they have not made any attempt to pay the bills.
Communications Director of the company for the Western and Central Regions, Nana Yaw Barima Barnie addressing a press conference said they would resort to the law courts to get their customers who owe them to pay their bills.
Nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise
The GWCL recently embarked on a nationwide revenue mobilization exercise to retrieve all arrears owed by customers from the 15th of November, 2021.
As part of the exercise, disconnection teams have been set up in the various regions and districts Offices to disconnect all categories of customers whose bills are in arrears.
The GWCL said disconnected customers will be made to pay their bills in full together with reconnection fees before they are reconnected. We therefore advise our valued customers to make efforts to pay their bills and clear all arrears to avoid being disconnected.
A statement issued to that effect said: “Apart from disconnecting defaulters, the teams will check illegal connections, self –reconnections and the use of in-line boosters pumps at customer’s premises. All persons found to be engaged in such criminal activities shall be handed over to the Police for prosecution.
Paid up customers must leave their payment receipts behind when leaving their homes (premises) to avoid wrongful disconnections. Also, customers who have paid via mobile money or other electronic means will need to show SMS payment receipts as proof of payment.
