The Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament Dr. Clement Apaak has described the government as clueless and reckless in managing the education sector.
The legislator says the government lacks any clue as to when the new textbooks would be introduced after several years the government introduced the new Standard Based Curriculum for our basic schools.
In answer to the MP for Builsa South Clement Apaak on when textbooks based on the new Standard Based Curriculum will be supplied to Basic Schools in the country, the Minister admitted that the textbooks were not ready because the procurement process was not over.
He said the procurement process was ongoing and at the final quality assurance stage.
This, he said, will lead to the award of contract, once the procurement process are over for suppliers to deliver the textbooks to the Regional and District Education Offices for onward distribution to schools.
According to him, the government acknowledges the need for textbooks in implementing the new curriculum and is working around the clock to supply textbooks to our basic schools. The procurement processes are ongoing.”.
He said once the relevant processes have been exhausted, distribution of the textbooks will begin across all the regions and districts in the country.
He was responding to urgent questions when he appeared before parliament on Thursday, December 9, 2021.
But Dr. Apaak is of the view that the government has shown no seriousness in managing the education sector.
He wondered why it should take years before textbooks are approved for a new curriculum.
“When will our basic schools get textbooks based on the new Standards Based Curriculum? The NADAA/Bawumia NPP government has no idea.
Two years after introducing a curriculum we still have no accompanying books?”
In his view, the government lacks the competence in managing issues of education in Ghana.
The situation he lamented is affecting the quality of teaching and learning with pupils being the most affected.
