Lack of headquarters, offices for NMC could affect their monitoring of terrorism threats-Minority

December 20, 2021

The Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has underscored the need for the government to consider providing the National Media Commission with a headquarters.

Speculation over Justice Sophia Akuffo’s Council of State resignation is needless, says legal practitioner

He said in the age of terrorism, if anybody should take advantage of an Fm station in Paga, it could be very disastrous for us as a country.

He was worried the NMC does have the needed equipment to monitor and prevent such threats.

In terms of monitoring, he said the NMC needs language experts for them to understand some of the issues that are said.

To him, the budget allocation for the NMC was woefully inadequate and the government must give them more resources particularly for the monitoring of our media space.

Seconding the motion for the approval of GH¢9,026,000.00 budget allocated for the services of the National Media Commission (NMC) for the 2022 financial year, he urged the NMC to develop a framework on the safety of journalists across the country to develop media freedom and also enhance freedom of speech in the country.

He also wants the NMC to set a framework to regulate the parameters of social media.

He said Ghana has the finest media landscape in the world and the safety of journalists must be paramount.

He urged them to revisit the arrest of Citi Fm/Citi TV’s Caleb Judah and ensure adequate protection of journalists so they will continue to expose wrongdoing.
