We’re going to face tough times as our Covid-19 cases rise-GMA warns

January 5, 2022

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has stated that Ghana will record more Covid-19 cases following the celebration of the festive season.

General Secretary of the Association Dr. Justice Yankson said Ghanaians disregarded the safety protocols during the celebration.

He noted that we must expect more cases in the next week.

“We are expecting to see more cases especially looking at how we celebrated the holidays. There was no regard for the safety protocols. Our biggest fear is that in the next one week, we will face serious challenges.”

He explained that “if history will guide us, going into 2021, we witnessed a similar incident. Our cases increased during that period. If you look at the trend, we are going to have a tough time”.

Dr. Yankson was speaking to Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.

He warned Ghanaians would laugh at the wrong side of their mouths should they continue to disregard the safety protocols.

He said the virus would continue to spread should we fail to be responsible and adhere to the safety protocols.

He further warned although it was difficult to predict, we could get to a point where our health facilities would be overwhelmed with cases and possibly face a shutdown.

He urged Ghanaians to act responsibly, and to political leaders, he charged them to lead by example if they wanted Ghanaians to adhere to the protocols.

“At some point, you will need to compel people to do what is right, and that power resides in the law and enforcement agencies and not doctors,” he stated.

Dr. Justice Yankson advised those who were yet to vaccinate to get vaccinated.

The vaccination, he said forms, part of efforts to help contain the spread of the virus.

According to him, there were enough vaccines in the country hence the need for unvaccinated persons to get vaccinated.
