Mayor of Accra welcomes visiting Hungarian President to Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

The President of the Republic of Hungary, His Excellency Janos Ader has paid a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park, the iconic last resting place of the first President of Ghana and his wife.

President Janos Ader who is on a three-day working visit to Ghana was accompanied by his wife, Anita Herczegh, and officials of his administration.

The trip which is the first by a Hungarian Head of state to Accra since the fall of communism seeks to strengthen economic ties between the two countries and to also explore possible areas of co-operation for the benefit of the two countries.

The President who was welcomed by the Mayor of Accra, Hon Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey and Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon Cecilia Dapaah first planted the “Tree of Life” which symbolises eternal life at the park after which he was led to the bronze statue of Nkrumah mounted at the same place he stood to declare Ghana’s Independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957.

He later proceeded to the catafalque raised at the centre of the park where the body of the late President and his wife were buried, laid a wreath and toured the museum which accommodates the personal belongings and publications of Ghana’s first president and pictures showing his life history as well as some unique artefacts relating to Ghana’s independence which include books he wrote, photograph archives and the metal coffin donated by the people of Guinea when the remains of Nkrumah were returned from Romania to Guinea and later to Nkroful.

Mayor of Accra in an interview after the tour with the Hungarian President said the Kwame Nkrumah mausoleum was a key component of the cultural and historic aesthetics of the city of Accra and urged the Diaspora community to visit and experience its rich heritage.

Other tourist sites in Accra worth visiting according to the Mayor were the Ussher and James Forts, the Bible House, as well as Franklin House, Brazil House, former slave masters’ house.

She also announced plans to establish a Hall of Fame in Accra to recognize indigenes who have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavour to encourage the youth to aim high.

She expressed commitment to safeguarding heritage and tourist sites in the City to preserve the culture of the people of Accra.
