Demonstration is not an option in resolving UTAG’s saga-NUGS

February 3, 2022

The Ghana Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has posited that a demonstration should not be an option for resolving the ongoing impasse between the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the government.

President of NUGS, Emmanuel Yiadom Boakye says the best approach is to dialogue and not a demonstration.

He was responding to the demonstration being organized by the Coalition of Concerned University Students (CoCUS).

The group says it is set to stage a demonstration against the government over its inability to address the ongoing strike by university teachers.

The industrial action of UTAG has entered week four with a possible shut down of all public universities if the government does not with immediate effect find a solution to the impasse.

But speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Yiadom Boakye said NUGS is not part of the demonstration and does not support it.

He said “as the leadership of the union, the strike action is not good. It is terrible and we have started our position. But we do not think a demonstration is the best approach. It should be the last option. We do not support the demonstration and we have not sanctioned the same.

As we speak now, to hit the street and demonstrate is the last thing we will consider. We are appealing to both sides to resolve their impasse. We will only plead with them to resolve their differences.”

Meanwhile, he has disputed claims that NUGS has failed to represent the interest of students.

He also refuted allegations that NUGS had received ghc40,000 to organize their events saying he does not respond to allegations.

He disclosed that the said amount was not received under his leadership.
