We’re going back to court to reverse the order for us to call off strike-UTAG

February 18, 2022

The University Teachers Association of Ghana has denied media reports of calling off the month-long strike action.

The Association has therefore asked the general public to disregard such stories.

General Secretary of UTAG, Dr. Asare Asante-Annor disclosed that the lawyers for the Association reviewed the order by the court for them to call off the strike and have decided to seek a judicial review.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said UTAG was not satisfied with the order of the court and has decided to seek a review.

He said “we have not called off our strike. Members are to note that, we have not called off our strike. The court ordered us to go back to the classroom but we disagree with the order. After the sitting, our lawyers reviewed the order by the court and we have agreed that we will review the court order. That is our right and if anyone is not satisfied, they can also go to court”.

He stated that UTAG was hopeful the meeting they held with the parliamentary select committee on education will yield positive results.

He slammed the government for failing to address their concerns despite efforts to have them addressed.

When asked if he was not sure we could see a repetition of what happened in the 1990s, he said ” we do not want a repetition of what happened in the past that is why we have asked the government to address our issues. We will not return to the lecture halls until our issues have been addressed. If we should call the strike off, the government will not address our concerns. We will continue to remain on strike until the issues have been addressed,” he concluded.
