The members of the Private Commercial Transport Operators have stated that no one can prevent them from increasing transport fares by 30%.
According to them, they do not need the approval of the government or the Ghana Road Transport Union before increasing their fares.
The operators had announced of 30% increase in transport fares with immediate effect.
They asked their members to implement the increase in fares on 18th February 2022, without further delay.
They justified their decision saying they want to save the transport business from collapsing with the frequent upward adjustments in fuel prices.
But the GPRTU argued that they had no authority to increase fares.
However, Yaw Barima
PRO-True Drivers Union, speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem said the GPRTU has no right to stop them.
He challenged anyone who thinks their decision to increase fares was illegal to drag them to court.
He said they can no longer bear the economic hardship drivers are going through and Ghanaians must accept the increment.
He added that those who can not afford to pay their new fares should depend on the GPRTU who were yet to increase their fares.
