International Relations expert Prof. Agyenim Boateng has asked the United Nations to intervene in the ongoing Russia and Ukraine crisis.
He said the situation could escalate should individual countries intervene in the matter.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Naem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he explained that the security council at the United Nations must deal with the matter.
Russian troops on Thursday launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin had cast aside international condemnation and sanctions and warned other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to “consequences you have never seen.”
Ukrainian border guards released footage of what they said were Russian military vehicles moving in, and big explosions were heard in the capital Kyiv, Kharkiv in the east, and Odesa in the west.
Some world leaders have condemned the attack since, in their view, the invasion could have far-reaching consequences, as global financial markets plunged and oil prices soared.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cut diplomatic ties with Moscow and declared martial law, saying Russia has targeted Ukraine’s military infrastructure.
In a televised address, Putin said the action comes in response to threats coming from Ukraine.
He further accused the US and its allies of ignoring Russia’s demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and offer Moscow security guarantees.
According to him, the attack was needed to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine – a claim the U.S. had predicted he would falsely make to justify an invasion
Reacting, Prof. Boateng said individual countries must not intervene.
He said just as Putin warned, the countries that will intervene at the individual level could face the consequences.
He, therefore, wants the UN to intervene on the matter to reduce any level of severe impacts on other nations.
Meanwhile, Russia has banned British airlines from landing at Russia’s airports and from crossing its airspace.
This was disclosed by the Russian civil aviation regulator.
Russia said the move was a response to “the unfriendly decisions by the UK aviation authorities”.
UK on Thursday banned Russia’s national airline Aeroflot from landing in Britain.
The measure was part of sanctions introduced following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace who announced this said: “I think that’s their retaliation for us yesterday banning Aeroflot from using and landing in the United Kingdom. That’s their tit for tat response.”
Russia’s civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia reacted saying: “This measure was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Intergovernmental Air Services Agreement between Russia and the UK as a response to unfriendly decisions by the UK aviation authorities regarding the restriction on regular flights of aircraft owned, leased or operated by a person associated with Russia or registered in Russia.”
