A lecturer and political analyst Dr. Boakye Yiadom has advised civil servants to seek other alternatives in addressing their concerns instead of always declaring strikes.
The lecturer believes civil servants can have their challenges resolved without resorting to strikes.
He was responding to an earlier decision by members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) to embark on a strike over unpaid neutrality allowance.
CLOSAG had intended to strike but they later called off the planned strike due to the timely intervention of the NLC after a stakeholder meeting held on Wednesday, April 20.
The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) announced its intention to embark on a strike from April 21 over the government’s failure to pay its members their neutrality allowance.
The Association in a statement said the allowance formed part of a Memorandum of Understanding entered into with the government on January 20, 2022.
Despite official reminders and follow-ups to the Finance Ministry, payment of the allowance has not been effected after more than three months as agreed, CLOGSAG stated.
But the strike was called off after deliberations and interventions from the NLC.
Dr. Yiadom commenting on the matter said the strike should not be an option as there are several ways of dealing with the labour issues.
To him, strikes disrupt the work of government and must be encouraged.
“Strikes in Ghana are becoming one too many. These strike actions are needless. Everyone wants to embark on a strike when their demands are not met. People are receiving their basic salaries but when their allowances are not paid, they go on strike. These strikes are unnecessary and we must move away from that”.
Meanwhile, he has asked the government to pay the allowance since it was an agreement it reached with CLOSAG.
