For ten years, our leaders have organised no elections; provided no account for stewardship- Gas Drivers Union

A group calling itself the Onuado Gas Tanker and Petroleum Drivers Union is protesting their leadership, accusing them of failing to account for their actions.

The disgruntled drivers claim that no elections have been held since the group’s inception ten years ago.

The drivers’ spokesperson, Emmanuel Chartey, led the charge, stating that no election has been held since the union was formed in 2012.

He also claimed that the union was supposed to be affiliated with the Trades Union Congress, but that the current leadership has joined the IUC and is defrauding drivers.

He said on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm’s Frontline that no election has been held since we formed the union in 2012. Drivers are being taken advantage of. We are not held accountable by anyone. Drivers are demanding that we hold an election to choose our union leaders.

He stated that despite following the issue, the IUC has shown no interest.

Even joining the ICU was against the law. But it was the leadership who did it. If you are a member of the ICU and work with them, you will notice that they do not care about us, even though we pay 10 cedis per load and the money goes to the union, and we receive no form of accountability.

He bemoaned the fact that, despite the dangers of their work, they have no form of protection, welfare, or support.

We want the interim executive to hold the union accountable. They should hold an election so that we can elect new leaders to manage the union’s affairs. Drivers are entitled to better. We can no longer stand by and watch what is happening. We have not elected new leaders in ten years, which is extremely unfortunate.”
