Supreme Court is inundated with cases- SC Nominee

A nominee for the Supreme Court bench, Justice Barbara Frances Ackah-Yensu, has opined that the right of people to go to Ghana’s Supreme Court with their cases is posing a challenge to the country.

In an appearance before the vetting committee on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, the nominee stated that in the United States, the Supreme Court is not overburdened with cases in a year, as is the case in Ghana.

According to an article she read in the US Guardian, the US Supreme Court hears 70 cases per year.

According to her, over 300 cases are heard by Ghana’s highest court each year.

“The fact that cases go to the Supreme Court as of right poses a challenge to us,” she told the lawmakers.

“The Supreme Court is inundated with cases,” she added.

When asked if she would support a constitutional amendment to limit the number of cases heard by the highest court in the land, the nominee said “It is up to the people of Ghana if we feel that there is the need to make changes in the constitution that needs to be done.”
