A Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak, has supported the call by the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) for the President to rescind the decision to appoint Dr. Eric Nkansah, as the new Director General for Ghana Education Service.
The lawmaker who represents the constituents of Builsa South agreed with the point raised by NAGRAT that the appointee is unqualified.
NAGRAT says it was against the appointment of Dr Eric Nkansah as the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
NAGRAT argued that Dr. Eric Nkansah is a banker who has no background in teaching hence the reason they reject his appointment.
“What annoyed and surprised all of us was that a new Director General has been appointed to the Ghana Education Service.
“The authority to appoint the Director General of GES is the President of the land. Unfortunately, contrary to what the teacher unions indicated that we would want a Director General who is a professional teacher who has passed through the mill and can bring his knowledge, skills and influence to bear on the activities of teachers and non-teachers in the GES.
“Contrary to that, the gentleman who was appointed yesterday is not a teacher; he is a banking officer who was a special assistant in the office of the minister and has been appointed as the DG of the GES. We are not happy with this development; it is as of we don’t have professionals and well-educated people who have gone through the mill in education in this country to run education,” the association said at the press conference.
Reacting to these concerns, Dr. Apaak said the appointee is not experienced and qualified to hold such a position.
He said the government ought to take education serious and appoint qualified people to manage the sector to ensure the delivery of quality service.
He asked the president to consider the concerns raised by NAGRAT and do the needful.
He said should the president fail to address the issue, it may create uneasy tension and frosty relationships between the appointee and stakeholders in the education sector.
Mr. President, Dr. Nkansah is a Banker by profession, with no real experience in teaching. Until now he was an aide to the Minister for Education. I agree with the teacher Unions, he is not qualified to lead GES. We ought to take the Education sector more seriously Mr. President!”
