The Ministry of Food and Agriculture says the retailing of food items at its premises to civil and local government workers at cheaper rates is not an exercise sponsored with state resources.
The Ministry explains that the move forms part of efforts to cushion Ghanaians and mitigate the impact of rising food prices.
Speaking about the exercise Ridwan Issah-Khalifah, Special aide to the Agric Minister, explained that the Ministry has partnered with some local traders who are selling the items at a cheaper rate to civil servants and other individuals.
“We are not using state funds for this exercise.” The government has not provided funding for the exercise. Some of the traders are working with the Ministry to carry out this exercise.”
He also dismissed claims that the exercise is intended to make Ghanaian traders appear to be extorting Ghanaian buyers.
On Friday, November 11, 2022, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture began retailing food items to civil and local government employees at its premises.
According to the Ministry, data gathered shows massive disparities in prices between production areas and urban centres due to costs within the value chain.
