GIJ (UniMAC) introduces new MA/Mphil, BA and Diploma courses in PR

The Public Relations Department of Ghana Institute of Journalism, a constituent of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication, has introduced a new MA/MPhil programme.

The main aim of the Master of Arts in Public Relations with Marketing is to provide our graduates with a convergent degree that combines modern lessons in both PR and Marketing.

This will afford them a competitive edge over single-pathway certificate holders. This programme will also equip our students with the ability to develop the analytical skills, and critical thinking necessary for a managerial-level role.

According to the school, students admitted into the programme will be well-grounded in the theoretical and practical trends in PR and Marketing such that they can apply the knowledge in leadership and provide counselling services to the dominant coalition in organizations.

The programme will focus on areas such as Strategic Public Relations Management & Campaign Planning, Brand Strategy and Evaluation, Strategic Marketing Management, Crises and Reputation Management, Internal Communication and Change Management, Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability, Advertising Management, Digital Communication, Public Relations for Public & Non-Profit Sectors AND Consumer Behaviour.

The school has also introduced the MA/MPhil in Strategic Public Relations Management has been designed to teach students how to craft and implement public relations strategies that meet organisational and client-specific goals. Through various case analyses and assignments, students would develop the critical and analytical skills necessary to effectively evaluate communication strategies, write compelling messages, and implement messaging across mainstream and digital channels, including social media.

The course is designed to develop effective and strategically oriented professionals who have the full complement of analytical, and practical tools to lead public relations and communication efforts. It fosters strategic thinking, logical analysis, and solution generation.

At the end of the course, students will develop the portfolio necessary to the needs of today’s strategic public relations professionals. The MPhil component is designed to offer students who wish to continue into academia or strategic research-driven roles the opportunity to enhance their research skills further.

Meanwhile, the department has introduced two new courses i.e BA Public Relations with marketing for both regular and weekend options, and Diploma in Public Relations.

The BA programme is to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills required to function as communication technicians in a convenient business environment.

The course also aims at providing students with contemporary trends and best practices in the Marketing and PR industry to give them a competitive edge in entry-level jobs.

The diploma is designed for people who want to start a career in the field of PR, Marketing, and Advertising.

It is developed to build students’ capabilities and technical knowledge in the basic contexts, concepts, and practices of PR in a dynamic business environment.
