System to register informal sector workers with SSNIT ready, we’II focus on them this year- Director General

The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, says part of the strategy is to go out and make sure that the benefits they provide for pensioners are extended to all workers in Ghana.

He said the law mandates SSNIT to provide income security for workers in Ghana through excellent business practices.

Dr. Ofori-Yenkorang said in 2022, SSNIT embarked on an exercise to make Ghanaians understand the need to register with SSNIT, especially those in the informal sector.

He argued that SSNIT is the only scheme that commits to paying contributors benefits until they die.

”So we assume longevity risk, which all the others don’t assume. We have gone around the country and explained to people the value that we provide.”

He stressed that the SSNIT scheme is open to all workers, and the law is clear on that, adding the scheme applies to employees and the self-employed.

He said SSNIT needed to set up an electronic system payment platform to allow people to remit money to SSNIT easily since the informal sector workers process their own payroll and are their own employers.

”We have a fully functioning MOMO platform, E-levy exempt that you can pay your SSNIT contributions. I am taking this opportunity to tell the people who are self-employed to take a look at SSNIT again for their own future and reach out to us, and we will reach out to them and register them.”

He noted that self-employed workers made up the majority of the working population in the country, and that the SSNIT Mobile Service being offered would include, among other things, the issuance of statement of accounts to registered members, the registration of employers and workers, the processing of benefits initiation, the renewal of pension certificates, the merging of SSNIT and National Identification Authority (NIA) numbers, and general enquiries.
