Hon Ernest Ofosu, the District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa South in the Eastern Region, has warned illegal miners, also known as galamseyers, to stop or face arrest and prosecution.
According to him, illegal mining activities have caused extensive environmental damage, particularly to water bodies and farmlands, and pose a threat to food security, with debilitating socioeconomic consequences.
The DCE bemoaned the resurgence of illegal mining in Osino and its surrounding communities.
He said stopping illegal mining in the area would necessitate additional attention and strategy from the district security council, stakeholders, and community members.
He also issued a cease-and-desist order to farmers who are selling their farmlands to illegal miners.
“I am giving illegal miners notice to stop their illegal activities. We will prosecute farmers who sell their lands to illegal miners who mine and destroy the lands and water bodies in the area. To avoid hunger, we must protect our lands.”
He stated that illegal mining activities are destroying the Brim River, which serves as a source for the Ghana Water Company Limited, and that those responsible would be prosecuted.
