The Electoral Commissioner Mrs. Jean Mensa has stated emphatically that the Ghana card would not be used for voting in 2024.
She disclosed this when she appeared before the Committee of the Whole in Parliament on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.
She said the EC has a proven track record in the registration of voters.
Mrs. Mensa averred that despite concerns raised by a section of the society that the registration of voters would not be successful, the EC registered over 17 million persons in 31 days during the COVID-19 pandemic and the rainy season in 2020.
The figure she explained represented 55% of our total population of 31 million, a figure that meets international standards, she added.
Mrs. Jean Mensa said except for Cape Verde which has a population of 600,000, we had the highest number of registrants in West Africa.
She described it as a seamless and inclusive process and no one was left out.
She disclosed that to enhance thre keep you 6otransparency of the registration process, the political parties may have their agents at the registration centres.
She said the EC would regularly update Ghanaians and the parties about the number of registered voters at each district office.
“Mr. Speaker, I wish to emphasize that the Ghana card would not be used to vote in the 2024 election. The Ghana card is only a requirement to register as a voter. He said once one presents a Ghana card and successfully registers as a voter the person would be issued a voter’s ID which bears the code of the region, district, electoral area, and the name of the polling station.
The Ghana card does not bear these features and therefore it could not be used to vote in the 2024 election.
