The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, revealed before Parliament’s Committee of Whole that an agreement has been reached with CalBank for a GH100 million facility to ensure the release of the over 3 million Ghana Cards held in bonded warehouses.
The Minister was addressing the Committee when he joined officials from the Electoral Commission and the National Identification Authority to respond to questions about the electoral body’s decision to use the Ghana card as the sole form of identification for voter registration.
“We have agreed to a GH¢100 million facility to ensure that the 3.2 million cards are released,” Mr Ofori-Atta told Parliament on Tuesday, adding that “GH¢80 million has been deposited, and the remaining GH¢20 million will be paid by this evening,” he said.
His remarks came after the National Identification Authority revealed that, while there are cards and capable staff to continue with the printing process, a private company in the arrangement is owed GH100 million, which is why they are refusing to release the Ghana Cards to the NIA.
