The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has admitted a private member’s motion filed by the Minority to have Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta present the Domestic Debt Restructuring Programme to the House for consideration.
The motion was proposed by Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader, Governs Kwame Agboadza, Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, Bolgatanga Central MP, Isaac Adongo, and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi.
The Finance Minister a few weeks ago appeared in the House to brief parliamentarians on the DDEP.
It came after the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, had directed the Business Committee of the legislative chamber to summon the minister to brief parliament on the programme that has sparked a series of riots among Ghanaians.
Mr. Ofori Atta urged the House to pass outstanding revenue bills, which would allow for more effective budget implementation and raise Ghana’s tax-to-GDP ratio from 13% to the sub-Saharan average of 18%.
According to the Minister, this action is critical in strengthening Ghana’s financial position and making the country more resilient to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Speaker urged the Finance Minister to reach out to Parliament in times of need. He emphasised that the House is always prepared to receive the Minister and that Parliament represents the sovereignty of the people.
