Defence Committee of Parl calls for truce in Ashaiman and military saga, to visit area next week

March 9, 2023

The chairman of the Defence and Interior committee who doubled as MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has called for a truce in the ongoing military brouhaha in Ashaiman.

Apologizing for the unspeakable atrocities committed against some innocent citizens, he said the attacks on the residents were unfortunate.

Mr. Kennedy Agyapong revealed that the committee would hold meetings with all the parties affected by the incident to iron out the issues.

In light of this, the committee has scheduled a meeting with constituents for next Thursday.

On Tuesday morning, the Ashaiman neighbourhood was placed under a self-imposed curfew after some soldiers reportedly stormed the area in response to the alleged killing of a soldier over the weekend.

The soldiers questioned and battered anyone they came across.

People were forced to lock themselves up in their homes for fear of being abused by the soldiers.

However, the Ghana Armed Forces explained in a press release issued yesterday that, while the military operation was sanctioned by the military high command, it was not intended to avenge the deaths of its personnel or to target innocent people.

They also stated that, as a result of the operations in Ashaiman-Taifa and Tulaku, military personnel apprehended 184 suspects aged 21 to 47 and turned them over to the Military Police.

The military command stated that the individuals apprehended would be turned over to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quarshie, Director of General Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, signed the statement.

Mr. Agyapong expressed his condolences to the bereaved family as well as the innocent victims who were assaulted.

He stated unequivocally that situations like this necessitate peace, which the committee seeks to achieve.

A statement he stated will not be made officially on the floor of parliament until he makes a visit to the scene.

In his part, the minister for Defence and MP for Bimbilla, Dominic Ntiwul, stated that there’s an ongoing investigation.

He indicated that he could make any comments until he and the committee visited the town to gather information about what caused the death of the military man.
