The remaining 34 Ashaiman residents who were apprehended by the military have been released.
Ernest Norgbey, Member of Parliament for the area, announced that all those arrested had been released.
“All of them have been released now, though we are receiving information that some families are saying that they have not seen their loved ones as of yesterday [March 9]. But I am sure as they [the military] have released the 34, everybody should be able to reach home and reunite with their families.”
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had disclosed that its operation in Ashaiman to find the killers of a military man was sanctioned by its high command.
According to a statement released to the media about the operation, the GAF stated that the operation’s primary goal was to find the perpetrators of the crime and not harm civilians.
“GAF wishes to state categorically that the military operation, which was sanctioned by the Military High Command, was NOT to avenge the killing of the soldier but rather to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime,” GAF said in its statement.
“During the course of the swoop, the personnel seized 29 slabs and 57 mini slabs of suspected Indian hemp and amnesia among other forms of the narcotics.
“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) also wishes to place on record that the swoop was not targeted at innocent civilians but was an intelligence–led operation conducted on suspected hideouts of criminals and crime-prone areas in the general area,” GAF explained in its statement.
