Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong has demanded that investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas apologise and compensate all victims he had investigated.
The controversial lawmaker made the demand while addressing journalists on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, after an Accra High Court had dismissed a Gh25 million defamation suit brought against him by Anas.
Anas, in 2018, dragged the lawmaker to court for allegedly defaming him. In his application, Anas prayed to the court to award aggravated damages of GHC25 million to compensate for the defamatory material published against him by the MP.
But the court dismissed the suit on grounds that the journalist failed to convince the court.
The court also ruled that Agyapong presented sufficient evidence to show that the plaintiff used the findings of his work to solicit money from people involved in the evidence he gathered.
According to the evidence, those who were able to pay the sums of money demanded by Anas and his associates were exempted from the videos that were shown to the public.
The court concluded that what Anas is engaged in is not investigative journalism but rather investigative terrorism and that Agyapong was justified to call Anas “a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil”.
Reacting to the outcome of the case, he said the victory is for the victims of Anas.
”The victory is for the victims of Anas. The good people of this country that Anas has destroyed. All those people who were sacked from their jobs. The people who have died through Anas’ illegal investigation should be compensated. Compensation is not enough. He has to apologise to his victims.”
He stressed that Anas goes out there to defame people to enrich himself, and Ghanaians must be bold to call him out.
