Prince Kwame Tamakloe, a Rainbow Radio reporter who worked on the toilet converted into a dormitory at the Ghana National Senior School, has refuted claims that the work he did was staged.
He stated that, contrary to the headmaster’s claims, the video was a true representation of what students were going through.
Doughlas Haruna Yakubu, the Headmaster of GHANASCO, condemned the film as devious and an intentional misrepresentation of facts.
Mr Yakubu feels the viral video was created and dramatised by the journalist to harm the school’s image.
He also stated that the school has enough capacity to accommodate more students and does not need to convert lavatory facilities into student dormitories.
“That facility has been so for many years, it has never been a dormitory or a storage room, it is a store more or less. In the 60s when Kwame Nkrumah built the rooms, they were washrooms, and so they still have the design of washrooms, but the facility has not been modernised, so they are just small, small cubicles and that is where we keep our chop boxes when students are travelling.”
“They are never sleeping places…these materials that you see might have been taken from the dormitory for him [journalist] to cover his videos and leave. Those cubicles are so tiny and so hot that students cannot live in them. We have enough space, so this is not fair.”
But the journalist has refuted the claims by the headmaster.
He has also revealed that some people have begun sending him threats via voice calls and social media messaging.
He has, however, stated that he will not be influenced by the threats made by the nameless persons.
“Some people have begun to email me threats. They believe I was hired by the NDC to manufacture the narrative to damage the government’s image. I’ve received messages on Facebook, some of which are frightening. Others have called as well. The headmaster had also called and informed me of his decision. He was upset with what I did, and he confronted me once the video was released.”
I don’t know why people want to discrete this story and claimed it was staged. It is not surprising to me because they are attempting to discredit the story to save themselves from embarrassment. It was the students who told me they had been sleeping there, and when I asked why, they said it was due to a lack of space.”
“It’s both unfortunate and amusing to hear the headmaster say it was staged.” I went there throughout the day and took these pictures. I wouldn’t have recorded films of cubicles with beds and others without if it had been set up. I attended Tamale Senior High School and am familiar with how things are done here.”
