The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) workers have said the Emergy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has invited them to a meeting following their notice to embark on a strike action to support their call for the revamping of the refinery.
The workers had announced a series of actions, including picketing at the Jubilee House.
But First Vice Chairman of the General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union, Samuel Boateng, says the Minister has invited them to a meeting so they would discuss the issues they had raised.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm’s Frontline, he stated that they had declared the action because it was disturbing that the refinery, which has the best engineers in the sub-region and can refine 45,000 barrels per day, was only carrying finished products rather than fulfilling its core mandate of refining crude.
He declared that ”the workers want TOR to work. Our interest is to see the company revamped. What is happening is that the company is not engaging in the core function of TOR. That is what the workers are fighting for. We want the company to be efficient and effective and work as expected”.
”We’ve held several meetings and petitioned authorities to address our concerns. They have refused to listen, and the only way to make our point is to go on strike. We have sent several letters to the Ministry of Energy, but no one has responded. ”All of the leaders in charge of our activities, but nothing has happened”.
