Member of Parliament for Builsa South Dr. Clement Apaak has slammed the government over its approved budget of Ghc2.5 million for the 2023 tree planting exercise.
The MP is wondering why the government will approve such an amount when school feeding caterers are currently on strike over unpaid arrears.
Currently, school feeding caterers are on a nationwide strike over unpaid arrears.
They are also demanding an increase in the cost per head for beneficiaries of the feeding programme.
They have asked that the cost be increased from 97 pesewas to Ghc3.5 cedis.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu-Bio, has revealed that the government has approved an amount of GH₵2.5 million for the 2023 Green Ghana tree planting.
The Deputy Minister mentioned this at a press conference at the ministry on the government’s preparation towards the 2023 Green Ghana Day celebration.
He stated that “As we speak now, our approved budget for the Green Ghana this year is GH₵2.5 million. This is not enough, but we cannot say that we are not going to celebrate the day this year. So, there’s the need to start appealing for funds, which we have started since last year and we are hopeful that we will get some support from our partners to make this possible.”
Reacting to this, Dr. Apaak took a swipe at the government saying the current amount per head for a child cannot even feed a pet and yet, Ghc2.5 million has been approved for tree planting
To him, trees are important but our children are more important.
“Gov’t owes sch feeding caterers, as a result they are on strike. The current rate per child per day is 97p, this can’t even feed a pet cat. Yet gov’t can find 2.5M to plant trees in times like this? Trees are important, yes, but our children are more important Mr. President.”
