Withdrawal of Duffour’s suit shows EC’s pullout was rushed and premature – Analyst

A lecturer, Michael Ebo Amoah, believes that Dr. Kwabena Duffour’s decision to withdraw his suit against the organisation of the presidential and parliamentary primaries demonstrates that the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to withdraw its supervisory role was immature and rushed.

The political analyst opined that the EC should have exercised patience and not rushed in withdrawing from supervising the primaries.

The Electoral Commission (EC) withdrew from Saturday’s presidential and parliamentary internal elections of the National Democratic Congress following a court injunction.

The EC asked the NDC to resolve its internal disagreements and outstanding legal issues before it can supervise the elections for the party.

“Yesterday we were served with an Application for Interlocutory Injunction seeking to restrain the Commission from supervising the conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary Primaries due to the alleged anomalies with the register, Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensa said.

“Gentlemen, in order that we are not cited for contempt, the Commission has taken the decision not to supervise the conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections until the determination of the case by the court,” she said.

Michael Ebo Amoah speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, said withdrawing the case was the wisest thing to do, adding that ”if he had not withdrawn the case, the court would have thrown it out and the court would have thought that Duffour was acting in bad faith.

After stating this position, he went on to say that the EC’s decision was hurried and not thoroughly thought out by the electoral body.

”From what has happened, the primaries would be held tomorrow, which is why I am disappointed by the EC’s hasty release of a statement on the subject. I believe it was too soon. People may question your motives as an independent election body if you do not take care and act in this manner. They should have waited and seen how the situation would have played out.”
