Obiri Boahen, a former deputy general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), believes the National Cathedral project is a mistaken priority.
The Ghanaian lawyer stated that he opposes the idea because it makes no economic sense for a country facing numerous economic issues.
In an interview with Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he mentioned the several projects that the cathedral funds may have been utilised for.
He emphasised that as an honest politician, he would not get on board and support something that would be detrimental to the country.
“The cathedral project is not the highest priority.” That is my personal viewpoint. I am a party member, yet I will support the cathedral project. Ghana is in the midst of a severe economic crisis, and the cathedral project is not a top priority. It should not be a top priority for a government in the midst of an economic crisis.
Ghanaians desire improved hospitals with cutting-edge technology and treatments. Ghanaians require improved roads. The youth are looking for work. Banks are no longer lending to us, so if you abandon these issues to build a cathedral, I will be honest with you and tell you that it is a misplaced priority.”
He emphasised that this is his personal opinion, which he still stands by, and that if others disagree with him, he is careless.
He also noted that, although fulfilling some of its promises to Ghanaians, the party has not been able to deliver on all of them.
“As an honest politician who respects and speaks the truth, I would not say that the NPP has fulfilled all of its promises,” he said. I would be telling lies if I claimed that the NPP had fulfilled all of the promises we made to Ghanaians in 2016. That is something I will never utter. I will never say that as a responsible, courteous, and trustworthy politician. I am a trustworthy lawyer and politician.
If we are in Ghana and still cannot get a train from Kumasi to Accra, we have a problem. We were unable to fulfil all of the promises we made to Ghanaians. But we gave it our all. “Every reasonable politician would agree with him on this,” he remarked.
He also stated that the issues we face as a people cannot be put only on Covid-19 and the Russian-Ukraine war.
