The National Democratic Congress has expressed readiness to support embattled James Gyakye Quayson to reclaim the Assin North parliamentary seat anytime a bye-election is held.
The party’s general secretary Fiifi Kwetey in a statement, said “The full weight of the party, including the Minority Caucus in Parliament, will be put behind Honourable Quayson so as to ensure an even more resounding victory for him in the upcoming bye-election”.
The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Mr Gyakye Quayson’s name should be removed from Parliament’s records.
This decision came as a result of a case brought before the Supreme Court, which invoked its original jurisdiction to investigate the constitutionality of James Gyakye Quayson’s election.
The NDC, in its statement, described the court’s decision as strange.
The NDC further referenced similar situations involving Honourable J.H. Mensah, Honourable Baba Jamal and Honourable Peter Amewu where the “Supreme Court had stated that it did not have the jurisdiction to invalidate a Parliamentary election and that the High Court is where such a matter should be taken.”
The NDC added that although there are “serious questions about the legitimacy of this decision after consultation with Hon Quayson, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wishes to state unequivocally that we are ready for the bye-election that is now the result of this decision”.
