Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, the nominee for Chief Justice, will be vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament today, May 26.
President Akufo-Addo appointed the Supreme Court judge to replace retired Chief Justice His Lordship Anin-Yeboah.
She was nominated in April 2023.
If she is confirmed, she will become Ghana’s third female Chief Justice, following Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah officially retired from active service.
Justice Anin-Yeboah was a judge for 21 years, including three years as Head of the Judiciary.
The most senior Justice on the Supreme Court bench, Justice Jones Dotse, has taken over as Acting Chief Justice.
This is by Article 144 (6) of the 1992 Constitution, which states that when the office of Chief Justice is vacant or the Chief Justice is unable to perform the functions of his office for any reason, the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court shall act as Chief Justice until a substantive Chief Justice is appointed.
