A 14-year-old girl is said to have committed suicide over a cell phone in the Eastern Region’s Adeiso.
The minor, named Nyamekye, is claimed to have committed suicide by consuming a weedicide.
Rainbow Radio’s Prince Collins Bening reported from the scene that the minor’s father had confiscated her phone because it was preventing her from learning.
The girl is reported to have threatened suicide if her father did not return the phone to her.
The father and other members of the family failed to take the threats seriously, and by the time she was discovered in her room, it was too late.
She was discovered in her room and was rushed to the Nsawam government hospital, but she died.
Our reporter added that the family is devastated but also furious that the minor could take her own life because a phone was taken from her so she could concentrate on her studies.
The family had also planned to bury her without last rites, but after being approached, they consented to give the minor final rites.
