Forty-eight illegal mining suspects have been apprehended for illegally entering an AngloGold Ashanti mining pit.
According to reports, the individuals are part of a wider organisation of illicit miners.
It was alleged that 300 illegal miners were trapped in one of the mine shafts at Anwiam in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti Region.
The illegal miners allegedly entered the subterranean shaft in quest of gold reserves but were unable to depart due to the closure of all exit routes.
The Obuasi East District Assembly is now striving to rescue the hundreds of illegal miners who are stuck in the mining shaft.
The Obuasi East DCE, Faustina Amissah says a number of the illegal miners have been able to exit underground as of Tuesday morning.
The company has since issued a statement on the matter.
Portions of the statement said contrary to claims that the illegal miners were confined, they could exit on foot.
“Unauthorised persons underground are able to exit on foot, via the existing ramp, through the main access of this mining area. No person underground has been confined in any way, and the main exit ramp from the mine remains open.”
