The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Appointments Committee members have stated that they will not withhold their approval of Chief Justice nominee her ladyship Mrs Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo by consensus.

Her curriculum vitae, according to Minority, reveals a person of considerable experience, having served as a judge from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and finally at the Supreme Court.

Mr Mahama Ayariga, speaking on behalf of the minority, added that women who have proven their worth should be given opportunities to hold key national positions.

He stated that, while they disagree with her jurisprudence, they believe she is qualified to serve as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

He first criticised the Supreme Court’s decision to direct that the name of James Guakye Quayson be expunged from the records of parliament.

He stated that the apex court enacted laws in the matter that was brought before it instead of interpreting the law as required of it.

The lawmaker noted that because James Gyakye Quayson is gearing up to contest in the Assin North by-election, the Minority will not vote against the CJ nominee.

He stressed that we the members of the appointments committee representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will not withhold our approval of the CJ nominee by consensus. Her CV reveals a person of considerable experience having served as a judge from the high court to the Supreme Court. Women who have acquitted themselves should be given the opportunities to occupy key national offices. Even as we disagree with her jurisprudence, we find her qualified to occupy the high office of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana”.
